The Shining- A true classic
Stanley Kubrick is a genius, but you probably knew this already. It was finally confirmed to me after watching the 1980 horror The Shining. This is a classic in every sense of the word, Kubrick's direction grabs you instantly; haunting, edgy, sinister, and claustrophobic. Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrence, is simply outstanding, Nicholson is one of the few actors I would regard as a true screen legend. The gradual decline of the main character into what amounts to pure madness, is astonishing, and has to be one of Nicholson's finest performances.
Equally impressive are the performances from Shelly Duvall as Wendy Torrence and Danny Lloyd as Danny Torrence, Duvall's performance is slightly annoying at times, as the hysterical, submissive wife, but she gives a good account of herself in the major scene's in the film. Child actors normally make me violently ill, as they tend not to act like children but forty something's. What is great is that Danny Lloyd is ultimately still a child even though he happens to have this special gift.
The pace of the film or lack of it helps the development of the story. Most horror films start off at a frantic pace, The Shining is a slow burner allowing for the harrowing events time to unfold. The shining was a labour of love for Kubrick, with scene's being shot over and over again, sometimes to the protests of the actors. But you can see in the final result, this is a true classic horror movie, which has provided us with so many of cinema's iconic moments. If by some crazy chance you have not yet seen this fine film, you must make every effort to get yourself a copy.

The Orphan-contains spoilers Kids!!!!
Sunday night viewing was the 2009 Jaume collet-Serra directed horror The Orphan, having seen the trailer on it's release I was not particularly taken. But after a few beers and the wonder that is Virgin films, decided to settled down with the girlfriend and her brother and his partner to proceedings. And wondered why I bothered, this is a fustrating film simply because of all the obvious fact's that present themselves throughout.
The couple in the film, Kate and John Coleman, played by Vera Farmiga, who is OK, and Peter Sarsgaard, who is not, are in trouble .Due to their third child-Jessica-being stillborn, Kate hits the bottle and John sleeps around. To try and salvage a relationship heading for the rocks, they decide to adopt. This is fair enough, although buying a puppy would be cheaper; and less likely to end in bloodshed.
Katie and Johnny roll up to the local orphanage and adopt the first child that happens to hold an intelligent conversation with them. Cue little Esther, a fine effort from Isabelle Fuhrman. Alarm bells are ringing at this point as young Esther hardly interacts with fellow children, instead spending her time painting and talking like a world weary old woman. The Coleman's embrace Esther into the family, in particular the relationship that forms between the Coleman's deaf-mute young daughter Max( Aryana Engineer) and Esther, is touching if not cringe worthy to begin with.
Unfortunately Daniel Coleman(Jimmy Bennett)is less welcoming and would rather the young Russian fell in front of a bus, which is not a bad idea and would have saved us all the hassle. All the warning signs are there the odd clothes, killing the cuddly nun who has rumbled her, the fact the Coleman's children are scared shitless of her. Even the way she manipulates Kate and John, and plays them off one another, does not raise the alarm.
This is what is so frustrating about The Orphan, that at any point little Esther would have been carted off to the nearest nut house. Not with the Coleman's, then to make matters worse, the twist, I am not going to spoil it for you but let’s just say it's interesting....

Welcome
I am pretty new to all this blogging malarky, due to the fact I am a technophobe and I hate computers with a healthy passion. Anyway I hope to discuss on here my love of all thing's film, and Tom Hanks of course!.
I am not a professional critic, so please feel free to contribute in a construtive manner, healthy debate is always welcome. Now I am off to watch the Bafta's hopefully someone will make a complete arse of themselves on National TV, failing that there is always Jonathan Ross!.
